About the Speaker

Matthew Johnson is a dynamic keynote speaker whose journey from military service to pioneering entrepreneurship showcases the power of perseverance, innovation, and strategic vision. With a background serving in the Canadian Armed Forces and five years shaping young minds as a high school mathematics teacher, Matthew embarked on an unexpected path that led to the forefront of the burgeoning drone industry.

In 2015, while still teaching, Matthew launched a drone service business as a passion project. Recognizing a gap in the market for comprehensive and engaging training programs, he leveraged his educational expertise to develop a groundbreaking curriculum approved by Transport Canada. What began as a side hustle quickly flourished into a thriving enterprise, offering drone services to the agriculture community, earning accolades for its innovative approach and impeccable delivery.

He was one of the first commercial drone operators in Canada to provide multispectral data to farmers and agronomists to help with crop input decisions. Over the years he has worked closely with crop research organizations and software engineering companies to collect and provide data for various research projects, and was named as one of the Top 7 Drone Visionaries in Precision Agriculture by the Commercial UAV News in 2019.  In 2019, Matthew was the keynote speaker at the Drones Synergies Conference in Dubai, UAE.  He also regularly speaks at the Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas, a major drone conference in the United States, where he keeps everyone informed about the latest developments in drones for agriculture.  Matthew is now Vice President at Volatus Aerospace, a pioneering company at the forefront of the aerospace industry, known for its innovative contributions to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drone technology.  At Volatus, Matthew oversees agricultural programs, and has launched multiple programs for secondary and post-secondary institutions using drones and machine learning technologies to assess plant health to detect plant disease, assess crop health, and identify invasive species present in natural environments.
